MSXML6.CAB

Hi,

I am currently using msxml4.dll as part of my web application, but my project manager requested that I update to MSXML6. That makes sense, but I cannot find a corresponding msxml6.cab file that I can download and distribute. The only thing that I web search turned up is MSXML6 SP1 MSI, which does not help web installations and cross operating system compatibility.

1. Is there an msxml6.cab? If so how can I get it?

2. Is it legal to redistribute msxml6.cab, if it exists? If not, can I redistribute msxml4.cab?

Thanks in advance,

Sarah M. Weinberger

Don′t know if that is still valid, but did you see the Blog from the XMLTeam of MS ?

http://blogs.msdn.com/xmlteam/archive/2006/10/23/using-the-right-version-of-msxml-in-internet-explorer.aspx

"Hi Andrew, right now we don't support CAB installation for MSXML6. But we've heard from a bunch of folks now that this is an important scenario so we're looking at wrapping our existing installer. "

Maybe you can come along with the MSI package and can create a boostrapper ?

MSXML6 install fails

I'm having a hard time installing SQLServer 2005. msxml6 keep on failing. The log looks like this.

Installing: msxml6 on target: GPA-DEMO
Error: MsiOpenDatabase failed with 87
Failed to install package
This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.

If i try to run the MSXML6.msi on the install disk directly i'm getting a permission error. Any ideas?

Copying the files to my hard drive and replacing the MXSML6.msi file resolved the problem.|||

When I try installing SQL Server 2005 MSXML6 Always fails where do I find the log file and can you explain what you did to fix the problem step by step.

|||Ohohohohhh, naughty boy - do you think it's that easy on the Microsoft Way? Just to check the log and see what happened?
Nahhh, that's not M$; it must be more difficult otherwise you wouldn't post here, to get in touch with other frustrated admins and you wouldn't be able to vent your frustration because you wouldn't be frustrated at all... that's not good, you know, in M$ world, a liad-back admin...

Log is producedf, of course - you just cannot read it.
Isn't it great fun? Smile Apparently due to some retarded thing or person - they are unrivaled in this field, Microsoft - by the time the path to the log is displayed the log already been deleted by the installer.
Sounds like tons of fun, right?
What? You think it's powerful stupid?
Oh noooo, you are wrong - you just need more Kool-Aid and you will realize it's THE FUN FACTOR. Yeah, this is what makes every M$ installation an unmatched challenge, it's a great fun every time...

MySQL is sooo boring - it just works, without any of these idiotic extra hops. Boring - I hate boring things, even if they work, you don't want to go there...

Now I am sorry but I have to go back and have more fun with SQL2k5 SP2 bec ause I'm having the same problem with all my selected components... good times, indeed!

|||I copied the content of the install CD to my had drive, replace the MSXML6.xmi with one i downloaded from the web and then ran the install from the hard disk. I have installed SQLServer mahy times and this was the first time it did not install.|||

I sorted my problem out by using the Windows Intall Clean Up tool. It seems that my machine had 2 versions of MSXML6 running on my machine using add remove programs was useless. If you use Windows Intall Clean Up tool to remove all traces of MSXML6 then reintall SQL SERVER it should work.

I think this is the link i used to download the tool.

MSXML6 breaks viewer used with Microsoft Electronic Learning Library

Installation of SQL 2005 Express resulted in the failure of the viewer used with the Microsoft Electronic Learning Library products. The viewer runs under IE and is driven by an XML file.

This has been verified on several systems. I uninstalled only MSXML6 and the viewer worked normally.

I have no idea if the problem is with the viewer script, the XML file driving it, or MSXML6 but obviously this might be a breaking change to the product.

Can anyone shed light?

Hi Tom,

I'm looking into this for you.

I found a workaround. If you disable the XML DOM Document 6.0 add-on in IE the viewer loads OK. Apparently MSXML6 is used by IE as the default if it is installed. This broke the MELL viewer. It would still be valuable to know why as other programs using IE as a frontend may break as well.

Hi,

The MELL dev team has been made aware of the issue that XML Parser 6.0 breaks MELL. They are currently working on putting together a patch for this. As soon as the patch becomes available, we will let you know.

Thanks.

|||

Before you run Mell, open up a dos window and run:

regsvr32 -u %windir%\system32\msxml6.dll

You should get an acknowledgement that the unregister was successful.

Start up your Mell training.

Go back to the DOS window and run:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\msxml6.dll

Again, you should get an acknowledgement. Learn away. Doing it this way means you won't forget to put things back so that SQL Server 2005 is fully functional.

|||Thanks. This fix my e-learning viewer problem. Is SQL 2005 express the only program dependent on msxml6.dll?|||according to MS this "bug" was done by design, the new xml parser blocks certain calls from mell because they are less secure, and ms is suppossed to have released a fix for this, but they have not done so yet...and the ppl from the xml team say the work around posted here (which has been suggested in many other places) is not recommended since it defaults your system to use the older less secure xml parser|||The fix is now located at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917583/en-us
