Multi site using SQL Express 2005

Hi,
I am writing Stock inventory and POS application.
POS will be used at multiple branches to collect sales, whereby Stock Inventory will be used in HQ for product info maintenance, stock in and etc.

I need to send all of the branch sales records back to HQ and send updated product info such as cost to branches everyday (could be multiple times per day).

I am thinking to use SQL Server Express 2005 at branches and SQL Server 2005 standard at HQ.

Do you think it is workable? What is the mechanism I can use to "transfer" these data?

Please advice.

Thank youHi,

compared to the MSDE, SQL Server 2005 Express only supports subscriptions for data. SSE can no longer by used as a publisher for changed data. SO you will have to either use another edition of SQL Server for transfering the updated data / use MSDE / create your own logic to tranfer the data from the branches to the HQ. Product info can be replicated to the branches using replication, as they can (as already mentioned above) act as subscribers.

HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

Multi Server/Database Nightmare

We have a setup with a web server and multiple databases, and a live, stage, and dev environment. We use SQL Server standard 2005 and use the ASP.NET ReportView control. I have spent countless hours now trying to get this to work and am about to give this up and go back to Crystal.

First I wanted a report that would work from dev to stage to live without modification, so we set up shared data sources on each environment to point to the appropriate database. No problem, I can publish it to each environment and it works, though sometimes I have to go into Report Manager and fix the data source.

Next I wanted to be able to work with multiple databases, identical in structure. For this we did a hidden parameter with the database name and used a formula for the query string. This works pretty well.

Next I wanted to be able to run against multiple database servers from a single web server. This has been nearly impossible. I've read a million posts about this, and nothing seems to work well. I've tried a dynamic connection string, and passing the server in as a parameter, but this doesn't work, because I can't get the credentials set on the ReportViewer.ServerReport, so it doesn't work from dev to stage. You can't programatically change the shared data source - that would make it too easy. Linked servers are not an option.

I guess I need to either publish a copy of the report for each database server, or set up an instance of SQL on the web server for each database server.

Any other reasonable options out there. I just can't imagine my setup is all that unique.

Have you explored the possibility of using Synonyms?

(Even dyanmically creating them when necessary.)

Multi Select Parameters?

In SQL Reporting Services, Is there anyway to create a parameter in
which a user can be prompted to choose multiple values from a list?
Ultimately, the multi-selected values would be passed to the Dataset
query as an "IN" qualification.
Example:
SELECT first_name, last_name
FROM employees
LEFT OUTER JOIN department ON
employees.dept_id = department.dept_id
WHERE dept_name IN ('Accounting', 'Sales', Support')
Crystal Reports has this functionality but I can not figure out how to
do this in MSRS.
If you know how to do this and would like to help a guy out, could you
include step by step answer or a link to a step by step tutorial?
Thanks! Here are a couple of options:
Option #1: Use a query expression as follows: ="select top 10 name, type
from sysobjects where type in (" & Parameters!Report_Parameter_0.Value &
")".
Option #2: Check

Multi Select Parameter from Function - Select All?

I am using RS 2000. I have a multi select parameter where I can select multiple states by separating with a comma. I am trying to figure out how to incorporate an "All" parameter.

Query:

Select [name], city, state, zipcode
From Golf inner join charlist_to_table(@.State,Default)f on State = f.str

Function:

CREATE FUNCTION charlist_to_table

(@.list ntext,

@.delimiter nchar(1) = N',')

RETURNS @.tbl Table (listpos int IDENTITY(1, 1) NOT NULL,

str varchar(4000),

nstr nvarchar(2000)) AS

BEGIN

DECLARE @.pos int,

@.textpos int,

@.chunklen smallint,

@.tmpstr nvarchar(4000),

@.leftover nvarchar(4000),

@.tmpval nvarchar(4000)

SET @.textpos = 1

SET @.leftover = ''

WHILE @.textpos <= datalength(@.list) / 2

BEGIN

SET @.chunklen = 4000 - datalength(@.leftover) / 2

SET @.tmpstr = @.leftover + substring(@.list, @.textpos, @.chunklen)

SET @.textpos = @.textpos + @.chunklen

SET @.pos = charindex(@.delimiter, @.tmpstr)

WHILE @.pos > 0

BEGIN

SET @.tmpval = ltrim(rtrim(left(@.tmpstr, @.pos - 1)))

INSERT @.tbl (str, nstr) VALUES(@.tmpval, @.tmpval)

SET @.tmpstr = substring(@.tmpstr, @.pos + 1, len(@.tmpstr))

SET @.pos = charindex(@.delimiter, @.tmpstr)

END

SET @.leftover = @.tmpstr

END

INSERT @.tbl(str, nstr) VALUES (ltrim(rtrim(@.leftover)),

ltrim(rtrim(@.leftover)))

RETURN

END

GO

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Deb

I think by using the UNION function from sql we can add "All" parameter to the query.

Here I have taken only one field for the example but you can change the whole table.

Ex:

Select 'All' AS NAME

UNION

Select name

From Golf inner join charlist_to_table(@.State,Default)f on State = f.str

By using this query this should give you 'All' parameter.

Hope this helps...

--Deepak

Thanks for your reply, however that doesn't work, as it just inserts "All" into the name. I know how to add the all parameter using Union with a drop down select list, but I am unsure how to do it with this function. Any other suggestions?

I finally figured out a simple solution - In the Report Parameters window under Default Values, Non-queried enter whatever the criteria is for "All'.

Multi select parameter dropdown

Hi there,
Does anyone know if it is possible to make drop down parameters multiple select? Much like one can in a list box by holding down ctrl and clicking on the records, but for parameters.
Please any help will be great.
RegardsIn box?
How could I let parameter accept multi value in a textbox?
Just like i want two parameter values "2003, 2004" in one parameter textbox,
then select the product in 2003 and 2004?
My syntax is..
Select A,B,C From XYZ Where (A in (@.Aparameter) or @.Aparameter='')
How should I do?
Thanks!

that Reporting Services (out of the box) will accept multiple values for a
parameter. There may be a way to use the WebService, however - there is a
ReportParameter.MultiValue Property available in there - it is read only,
however. Is it possible to have multi valued parameters using the web
service?

Can the Standard edition of SS2000 take advantage of multiple processors or
do we need the enterprise edition? Do we need the enterprise edition to take
advantage of memory over 4G?
Thanks,
Dan D.
Std edition of SQL Server 2000 can use up to 4 processors although not all
commands will use them in parallel. For instance Creating or reindexing an
index will not use multiple processors. But queries can use parallelism when
appropriate. You do need Enterprise Edition to use more than 2GB of memory
in 2000. IN 2005 though Std edition can use up to the OS maximum for memory.

Multi Controller

For large databases backup the databases in to multiple backup devices
spanned across multiple disk controllers.
This will create multiple threads during backup right...
what is the command like let's assume we have three controller C: D: E:
the backup command we can write like
backup database DBName to disk = c:\DBDirectory
How can I take the backup into the multiple backup devices on the spot.
Thanks
Hi,
1. Create seperate Backup devices pointing to each controllers using
sp_addumpdevice system stored procedure.
2. Backup the database using Backup database command mentioning all the
devices
Backup database <dbname> to db1_control1,db1_control2 with Init
with init option will overwrite the backup files
Thanks

You can specify the filename directly as well.

Is that means that the same backup will take place into two cotroller or
partially one and partially into another.

multi choice dropdownlist

Hi,

I want to display States for selected country in a dropdown list and allow user to choose multiple states before clicking view report . Is this feature possible in SRS ?

Pl help

Bhat

Bhat,

In the report parameters dialog screen, click on the parameter and check the box that says multiple values.

This will place a checkbox on each item in the dropdown list, and allow them to check all that apply.|||

I want to implement this feature in 2000 reporting service . I am aware it is in 2005 .

Mult Select in SQL Reporting Parameters

Is there anyway to have a parameter that can be a multi select. Example
something that will allow multiple states to be selected?Sql Server 2000 Reporting Services does not directly support this
functionality. It is on our wish list for inclusion in a future release.
However there is an solution to this post on the GotDotNet.com web site:

One suggestion: if the parameter only needs TWO you could just have
two parameters that prompt the user for the same information. For
example, if you needed to select two months, you could have two month
parameters.
If you do not know the number to be selected - a custom interface is
the best solution - a free text with "1,2,3,4,5" entered by the user
is fine, though prone to error from human entry issues.

Mulitple Joins and Nulls

I am trying to join two tables on multiple fields. But the nulls aren't considered a match so they aren't included in the results set.

Select A.Lot, A.Block, A.Plan, B.Key

from A join B on

A.Lot=B.Lot

A.Block=B.Block

A.Plan=B.Plan

In the data, there can be an instance where Block is null in both tables so it "matches" but not in SQL. How do I get the "matched" nulls to be returned as well?

You can't match on the nulls in the database.|||Try something like this:
Select A.Lot, A.Block, A.Plan, B.KeyFrom Ajoin Bon A.Lot = B.LotAnd A.Plan = B.PlanAnd( (A.BlockIsNull And B.BlockIsNull)Or (A.Block = B.Block))
|||Richard, that worked great. Thanks for the excellent advice.

Does anyone know if we need Standard or Enterprise Edition if we want to use Multiple instances for SQL2000.
Thanks, Mark.Either will work.|||Yep works with Standard, Enterprise, Personal and Developer not sure about MSDE though.

mssql: case statements with multiple columns

A standard case statement in MSSQL server looks like:
...WHERE s.idMarket =
CASE @.Mode
WHEN 'Sales' THEN 1
ELSE 2
END
but I want a similar statement to use multiple values of 'idMarket' for
each value of '@.Mode'
e.g.
...WHERE s.idMarket =
CASE @.Mode
WHEN 'Sales' THEN 1, 3, 5, 6
ELSE 2, 4, 7, 8, 9
END
is this possible through an mssql query?
cheers.
fiddlewidawiddumYou can't use case that way.
For this may be you can rephrase the where clause this way..
WHERE (@.Mode = 'Sales' and s.idMarket in (1, 3, 5, 6)) or (@.Mode <> 'Sales'
and s.idMarket in (2, 4, 7, 8, 9))

that actually works great.. thanks!

fiddlewidawiddum|||>> A standard case statement in MSSQL server looks like: <<
There is no CASE statement in SQL; there is a CASE expression. An
expression returns a scalar value of a known data type.
Again, you missed the concept "expression" and "scalar" so the
question is wrong. Then even if it would have worked, you would have
to use IN() and not = in the predicate. Besides not bothering to learn
SQL, why did you violate ISO-11179 by putting "id-" as a prefix? Why
did you use a vague nmae like "mode" --mode of what'
Try something like this:
..WHERE CASE
WHEN S.market_id IN (1, 3, 5, 6)
AND @.mode = 'sales'
THEN 'T'
WHEN S.market_id IN (2, 4, 7, 8, 9)
AND @.mode <> 'sales'--mode of what'
THEN 'T' ELSE 'F' END = 'T';
