Multi Server/Database Nightmare

We have a setup with a web server and multiple databases, and a live, stage, and dev environment. We use SQL Server standard 2005 and use the ASP.NET ReportView control. I have spent countless hours now trying to get this to work and am about to give this up and go back to Crystal.

First I wanted a report that would work from dev to stage to live without modification, so we set up shared data sources on each environment to point to the appropriate database. No problem, I can publish it to each environment and it works, though sometimes I have to go into Report Manager and fix the data source.

Next I wanted to be able to work with multiple databases, identical in structure. For this we did a hidden parameter with the database name and used a formula for the query string. This works pretty well.

Next I wanted to be able to run against multiple database servers from a single web server. This has been nearly impossible. I've read a million posts about this, and nothing seems to work well. I've tried a dynamic connection string, and passing the server in as a parameter, but this doesn't work, because I can't get the credentials set on the ReportViewer.ServerReport, so it doesn't work from dev to stage. You can't programatically change the shared data source - that would make it too easy. Linked servers are not an option.

I guess I need to either publish a copy of the report for each database server, or set up an instance of SQL on the web server for each database server.

Any other reasonable options out there. I just can't imagine my setup is all that unique.

Have you explored the possibility of using Synonyms?

(Even dyanmically creating them when necessary.)

MSSQL2K and MSSQL side by side in clustered environment

I haven't been able to find any publications on Internet regarding my concern.
We have a MS SQL2K installation in a clustered environment, and would like
to migrate to MS SQL2K5 using a side-by-side installation. To my knowledge,
this should be possible. Could you please direct me to any documents
describing how to perform this task. Is it as easy as creating two new
resource groups (we're using two instances for the MS SQL2K installation
today), create the necessary resources (sql name, sql ip, services and
disks), and installing MS SQL2K5 to a different location than the current
installation? The operative system on the servers are Windows 2003 Enterprise
Edition and the MS SQL 2K5 Server edition we intend to use is the Enterprise
edition.
Yes, you can do this. You need to create a new group which has disks which
have not been used for any other SQL Server Virtual. Then install a new SQL
Server 2005 Virtual. (It will need a new name and new IP address.) Once
installed, you can finish the migration by using either attach/detach or
backup/restore. You can also minimize the amount of time the migration
takes by implementing either log shipping or replication from SQL Server
2000 to 2005 and then cutting over where they are synchronized.

I've successfully managed to create a new cluster resource group, and have
created a disk resource, an ip address resource and a network name resource
(is this what you referring to as SQL Server Virtual?). I manage to
failover/move group resources to the other node and back again. I am able to
ping the Network Name which responds well and translates to the correct IP
address, so the cluster seems to be fine. When I run the SQL Server 2005
Enterprise Edition setup program, I am required to install ASP .Net 2.0, SQL
Native Client + Setup Component files, this works fine. When I click next and
the installation program performs a system check, the application seem to
work for a while, and then I get the following error message:
There was an unexpected failure during the setup wizard. You may review the
setup logs and/or click the help button for more information.

Network Name and IP address resource for the clustered SQL instance are
created by the installer. It appears that the installer sees a complete
virtual server, although without SQL, and is having problems installing to
that resource group.
Also, the installer will crash if there is any clustered resource currently
offline.

|||Yes. If the cluster has any resource or resource group offline, the SQL
installer will crash. The SQL installer tries to enumerate resources and
properties during a cluster install and fails badly if anything is offline.

Mssql2000

Environment: OS-Win2K MSSQL2000
My problem:
I need to insert data from a table in MSSQL2000 to a Sybase V12.5 table.
I did a C++ program (as extended stored procedure-ESP), which runs O.K. if I start it manually.
If I start it thru a MSSQL2000 Job (defining a job, inside it is a SP and inside of it is my start of ESP), then I'm getting some errors.
This is now priority 2.
Priority 1 is:
for testing of this ESP I have to stop MSSQLSERVER service and copy the new version if ESP. And then I'm starting MSSQLSERVER service and SQLSERVERAGENT. Both are running O.K. without any events in Event Viewer.
But if I'd like to start SQL Query Analyzer I can't login into it. I'm getting an error:
Unable to connect to server:Msg 17, Level 16, State 1

The definition of Client Network Utility is O.K. ( it was good until I have started with tests)
SSNETLIB.DLL is V2000.80.194 - is it O.K. or too old for this task?

My question is - what should I do? to make SQL runable?:(May take help of this KBA (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q311836&gssnb=1).|||Originally posted by Satya

Hi Satya,

I have checked it all.
Sorry, but it doesn't work.

And it's funny, but I have set in Services the MSSQLSERV on MANUAL and after reboot that services is started!!! Why? I thought it won't be started after reboot. And there's no Job in MSSQL that could do it automatically.

What do you mean about it all?
Zbig:confused:|||Make sure to make the SQLAgent service manual too.
Start your SQL server service first and then agent service, see what error you will get. Seems your SQL server service is not started correctly. Make sure your agent service is set up correctly including the username and password.|||True, make sure to have necessary privileges for SQL services account.|||Originally posted by Satya

Hi,
I decided to do so:
I reinstalled the whole MSSQL Server, e.g. thru it I have got the "NEW" refreshed Registry (ONLY this and nothing MORE) and all was then O.K.

Thank you for this help!
:) :p
